Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
