European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
