Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
