At least 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
